How the live population estimate works
No authority counts every person on Earth in real time. Official population figures are estimates assembled from censuses, civil registration, surveys and demographic models. This page retrieves the latest annual population values published through the World Bank indicator SP.POP.TOTL, whose underlying sources include the United Nations Population Division and national statistical offices.
The moving counter is a model, not a literal count. It extends the latest published mid-year estimate using the change between the two most recent annual observations. Country figures are projected in the same way where two observations are available. Actual births, deaths and migration do not occur at a constant rate, and revisions may change historical values.
Population of every country
Use the search field to find a country or area. The table shows a current modelled estimate, its approximate share of the world population and the latest source year. Figures are intended for general comparison and education. For research or official decisions, follow the source link and use the published annual dataset.
