What this counter means

Petroleum products power transport, industry, agriculture and many everyday supply chains. This counter makes the scale of global demand easier to grasp by distributing the latest complete annual average evenly across every second of the current day and year.

Method and limitations

Global demand is not reported second by second. The 2025 figure combines inland demand, international aviation and marine bunkers, and refinery fuel and loss; it also includes biofuels and coal- or gas-derived liquids under the source definition. Real consumption varies by season, region and product, so the animation is a model rather than a live meter.
